Where Does Trader Joe's Chicken Come From?
Where does Trader Joe's chicken come from? Historical package evidence points to multiple plants, including Perdue facilities.
The reviewed public sources do not provide a complete current supplier roster. Published reporting points to multiple processors, while Trader Joe’s organic-breast description gives a raising claim without naming the farms. To trace your package, match its full USDA establishment P-number to a plant record and keep the product and date alongside it. That identifies a processing facility, not the farm where the bird was raised. Historical reader submissions and media supplier lists are leads with limits, not proof of today’s nationwide lineup. Nor does a shared plant establish an identical product, recipe or treatment. Prepared chicken foods need a separate supply-chain check.
Review dated October 29, 2026. Evidence includes company copy for one organic breast product, attributed 2026 reporting and historical 2021 poultry-package submissions. No current complete supplier list, farm tracing, package inspection or treatment finding is claimed.
Chlorine-washed chicken FAQ: all questions answered
What does Trader Joe’s disclose?
Chowhound’s August 20, 2026 report says Trader Joe’s does not reveal specific chicken farms or the companies making its meat at a given time. Our current company-site search returned results, but the reviewed pages did not supply a complete raw-chicken roster. This is a scoped disclosure gap, not proof that no statement exists anywhere.
The company’s organic-breast statement
For Organic Free Range Boneless Chicken Breasts, Trader Joe’s product description says the chickens are raised “primarily on family farms, under the strict USDA guidelines for Organic Certification.” Chowhound quotes that company copy. It names no farm and applies to that breast product only.

Historical submissions show multiple plants
ProPublica’s 2021 collection drew nearly 900 poultry-package submissions.
Tasting Table’s February 2026 account of that work describes Trader Joe’s poultry linked to at least 15 plants, including Perdue facilities in Delaware and California and Cooks Venture in Oklahoma. These were reader submissions, not a supplier roster; the poultry included turkey. Chowhound cautions that the evidence does not necessarily represent all confirmed suppliers. It cannot establish a current complete list.

| Question or clue | Source | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Company supplier disclosure | Chowhound, August 2026; reviewed company pages | No complete current raw-chicken roster located in this review. |
| Organic breast raising description | Trader Joe’s product copy, also quoted by Chowhound | A product-specific family-farm/organic claim, not named farms. |
| Historical multi-plant links | Tasting Table’s account of 2021 submissions | At least 15 plants; reader submissions including turkey, not a complete supplier roster. |
| P-1318 | Chicken Checker plant record | Perdue Foods, Milford, Delaware; a plant identity, not a current Trader Joe’s contract. |
| P-2882 | Chicken Checker plant record | Perdue Foods/Petaluma Poultry, Petaluma, California; a plant identity, not every package’s source. |
| Wider processor names | Chowhound reporting | An attributed media list, not a Trader Joe’s disclosure. |
| Package tracing | Establishment-number guidance and plant lookup | A full P-number can identify the plant; it does not identify the raising farm. |
Keep the package, date and evidence type together. No row establishes that products sharing a plant have the same recipe or processing treatment.

Two reported organic-chicken plant examples
Tasting Table names Petaluma Poultry in Petaluma, California, a Perdue subsidiary, and Perdue Foods in Milford, Delaware as two large organic sources in its account. This is attributed reporting, not a verified ranking of current supplier volumes. Chicken Checker identifies P-2882 with the Petaluma plant and P-1318 with Milford. Match the full identifier on your own package before applying a plant record.

The wider list is reporting, not a company roster
Chowhound names Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s (JBS), Sanderson Farms, Mountaire Farms and Perdue Farms. It also attributes to the Cornucopia Institute the suggestion that large manufacturers such as Perdue produce much private-label organic chicken. Neither statement is a Trader Joe’s supplier disclosure or proof of a current contract for your package.
How to trace your package
Find the full establishment P-number near the USDA inspection mark or at the location the label specifies. Keep any suffix, product name, lot and date together. Use the establishment lookup to identify the plant, checking the record’s date and scope. Chicken Checker contains historical data; its plant identity and historical results should not be presented as a current inspection.
A plant match does not trace the raising farm. A recall may also connect a specific product and lot to a facility, so the package number is not the only possible source of plant evidence. Neither route establishes another package’s origin or treatment.

Keep prepared foods and processing questions separate
Do not use a prepared-food maker to identify the supplier of raw chicken. Prepared foods require their own product-specific supply-chain evidence. Supplier identity also does not settle wash treatment, chilling, retained-water wording or organic certification; those reviews are linked below.

Related questions
Does a P-number identify the chicken farm?
No. It identifies an inspected establishment. Keep a processing-plant match separate from the farm where a bird was raised.
Is the published processor list a current Trader Joe’s supplier roster?
No current complete roster is established by the reviewed sources. Keep media claims and historical package evidence attached to their dates and products.
Does chicken from the same plant have the same recipe or treatment?
A shared establishment does not establish an identical product, recipe or treatment. Those claims need product-specific evidence.
