Australian National Residue Survey — goat programme
Government monitoring for pesticide, veterinary medicine and contaminant residues in Australian goats.
- About
- Run by Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; funded by industry levies.
- Practices
- Random samples are collected during processing. The tissue tested depends on the chemical being monitored.
- Practices
- The 2023–24 goat survey reported 271 samples and 99.63% compliance with Australian standards.
Goat survey: 2023–24
The 2023–24 goat survey reported 271 samples and 99.63% compliance with Australian standards. These are population-monitoring results, not a test certificate for a retail package.
Compliance measures results against applicable standards; it does not mean no residues were detected.
No Costco lot, named farm, individual treatment history or residue-free claim follows from this survey.
The exact analyte, tissue and threshold behind the survey’s noncompliant result remain unresolved in the reviewed research.

What the samples measure
Samples target tissues where the monitored residue is expected to concentrate. General monitoring examples include fat for pesticides, kidney for antibiotics and liver for metals.
The tested tissue can differ from the retail portion, so results cannot be read as residue prevalence in goat muscle.
A laboratory screen identifies what was tested for; it does not establish what every animal received.
Random survey sampling is separate from targeted antibacterial testing of suspected withholding-period cases.
