Food-safety audit: 2026

Butler’s BRCGS Issue 9 certificate records an announced May 12–14, 2026 audit, grade A, and expiry July 15, 2027. Its scope includes fresh and frozen patties and other ground products.

The certificate concerns the processing site’s food-safety system. It does not establish cattle feed, animal care or a finished-lot test result.

The older 2025 A+ certificate is a different version.

The certificate is separate from the full audit and corrective-action records.

Ground-beef sampling programme

Cargill’s January 2026 testing programme includes Butler. Ground-beef samples are collected from operating lines and combined by time point. A testing declaration accompanies shipments.

Sampling is a pathogen-control measure. A shipment declaration is separate from individually testing every retail burger.

The programme does not supply a result for the linked Member’s Mark package.

A single ground-beef lot can be shipped to multiple customers.

E. coli outbreak: 2007

In 2007, contaminated patties made at Butler were linked to an E. coli outbreak and an 845,000 lb recall. In 2016, an appeals court upheld Cargill’s $9 million verdict against supplier Greater Omaha.

The case documents a serious historical supply-chain failure. Negative sampled supplier certificates had not prevented contaminated material entering production.

The affected item was American Chef’s Selection Angus patties, not today’s Member’s Mark 12-count smashed burgers.

The four suppliers named for the August 16, 2007 production are not a current supplier list or findings against all four.

This historical case does not establish that current controls fail or that the linked product is contaminated.

Machine-guarding citation: 2024

OSHA cited unguarded conveyor sections on Butler’s hamburger-patty line in June 2024, with a $10,775 penalty. The record marks the hazard corrected during inspection; the case closed July 24, 2024.

This is dated worker-safety history, with the recorded correction retained. It is separate from meat contamination or animal welfare.

The citation describes amputation hazards, not a confirmed amputation in this case.

Closed status does not establish penalty payment or the condition of equipment today.
