Organic vs. grass-fed beef

Organic beef is not necessarily 100% grass-fed. Organic certification covers feed production and raising practices; organic grain can be part of the diet. If you want both, look for USDA organic certification and a 100% grass-fed claim on the same product.

What organic covers

USDA organic livestock standards cover organic feed, animal living conditions, health care and restrictions on antibiotics and hormones. Certification includes records and on-site inspections. USDA organic livestock standards

Organic does not mean an all-grass diet

Organic cattle must meet pasture requirements, but the organic rules do not require a lifetime grass-only diet. Organically produced grain can be part of their ration. If both attributes matter to you, look for organic certification and an explicit grass-fed-and-finished claim. USDA organic production standards
